The Exhibition “Miti greci per principi dauni” at Rome Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia has just opened

On November 22, 2024 the exhibition “Miti greci per principi dauni” has opened at the Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia in Rome.

The exhibition celebrates the restitution of 25 archeological finds to Italy, including a group of vases from the Altes Museum in Berlin which have been returned following an operation led by the Carabinieri TPC, the District Attorney of Rome and Foggia and the offices of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

On June 13, 2024 in Berlin, an agreement has been signed between the Italian and German Ministries of Cultural Affairs, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Berlin museum to return the archeological pieces.

Among the artworks, a group of vases from the Ancient population of the Dauni, in the Italian Puglia region. The pieces were originally buried in Ancient tombs. They are said to have been illegally excavated and exported.

After being exhibited at the museum in Rome until March 16, 2025, the archeological pieces will be returned to Puglia, first at the Castello Svevo in Bari while waiting for their permanent exhibition place at the National Archeological Museum in Foggia — an institution which will be dedicated to the restitution of archeological artworks to counter illicit trafficking and tomb robberies.
